In 2009 we were lucky enough to spend a fabulous month long trip, driving an RV, across America. We met some “awesome” people, and saw some amazing places.

From seeing the spectacular  Niagara Falls in Canada, to meeting alien RALF in Roswell, we found our way to Amarillo, were surrounded by wild coyotes whilst sleeping in a canyon. We had a near death experience driving through Texas, travelled along Route 66, visited Elvis’ home at Graceland and were close to a lightening strike in Nashville. There was a visit to the JD brewery in a dry county in Tennessee, before heading south through Carolina to our final destination of Florida.

But that is a long story for a different day….

This trip however has made us ponder for years whether to buy a Camper Van/Motor Home when we retired and relive some of the happy experiences driving around the UK and Europe. Taking the road to wherever the mood takes us, being able to pull up for a cuppa whenever we fancy one is very appealing.

We have discussed various types from the nostalgic VW to a brand spanking new one with a permanently made up bed and shower/toilet facilities. Although we’re relatively young retirees I don’t relish having to get up and trot across a field if I need a wee in the middle of the night. However having our own loo brings back hilarious memories of having to empty the poo pipe on our RV trip in Tennessee. Where it took four of us using a Mexican wave style motion to manouver the contents of the waste tank into the facility. Still makes me cry with laughter.

On the positive we could take everything we needed with us and snuggle up in the comfort of our own bed each night. If we didn’t enjoy where we landed, it would be easy to pack up and move on somewhere else. It would make exploring the Uk & Europe very simple and relatively comfortable.

We would need to get one big enough to take some of the Grandkids or our mates along for the ride.

So this week I am thinking yes let’s do it.

However as I’ve matured I have gotten used to a bit more comfort and we’ve enjoyed some fantastic city breaks in some fabulous hotels. Nothing beats being looked after by someone else and getting dressed up to go out for dinner. To be able to sit in a spacious room early evening with a gin and tonic in your hand looking out over the bright lights of a fabulous city at night.

Coming back to a freshly cleaned room and neatly made bed. Waking up to a beautifully prepared breakfast, then strolling out to wherever the mood takes you, whilst someone else does the washing up.

So next week I may well say let’s use the money we would have spent on a camper van to travel further afield on some more city breaks.

Decisions decisions. But what lovely dilemmas to have.
