This week has been a strange one. The final week of the school holidays and true to form the sun disappears. We started the week by harvesting veg that the three little ones have helped to grow. Not the greatest success but tasty all the same. The plan was to get them to help grow veg to encourage them to try different varieties. Unfortunately it has been a complete failure 😩
We have been trying to make the most of the week. On Sunday the twins went camping in their imaginary camper van. (Actually a broom but they both stood astride it and went on holiday!) That reignighted our debate. On Tuesday we dodged the showers, gave Mum a break & took them to the park, having fun on the swings and roundabouts. Wednesday we were out for breakfast and the kids had a run around the indoor play area. Thursday morning we were hoping to get to the rock pools. Low tide was 7.20am so thought we would catch the pools before they were submerged again. Tide came in sooner than we thought so we missed them. Had to make do with a wander along the beach dodging the waves. Then headed for another play park. Today they and Mum are attending a teddy bears picnic at school to meet their new teachers and classmates.
Phew exhausted!!!
Our Granddaughter has had friends, she met on her 1st girlie holiday, staying over and has enrolled for her final year at college. The two older boys have reluctantly returned to school and the twins are preparing for their first day on Monday.
I can’t believe it’s here already. I remember when they arrived home their tiny chicken legs sticking out of their rompers. The chaos two babies, arriving together, caused in the household, with feeding, changing, bathing and my daughter trying to get some sleep, whilst having to look after three other children and the house being ripped apart to accommodate the now nine of us.
So another new chapter starts in our household. What a year it’s turning out to be.
It has been lovely being such an integral part if their lives. Living with Grandparents is normal for them, so they are more willing to snuggle on the sofa with Nanny & Grandpa than the older children. We have been there for all the triumphs of learning to sit up, crawl and pull themselves up at the furniture. Encouraging them to take their first steps, then realising maybe it wasn’t such a good idea as they hurtled off in different directions, thinking it was hilarious that we were chasing them.
We have enjoyed hearing their first words, seeing them start to count and recognise their first letters. Then there was the excitement of their first wee on the potty, which unfortunately got kicked over on numerous occasions until they were big enough to use the toilet. Now we are going through that stage all kids go through, finding poo and farts such hilarious topics. Grandpas nickname is currently farty pants, although not unreasonable, it can be a little embarrassing when we’re out and about!
Daytime will be eerily quiet. We are going to miss their cheeky little faces poking around our living room door then running away giggling, and their eager eyes when we make a cup of tea and they want to dunk biscuits. There are days when they play so well together it’s just adorable, then there are days when they fight over a specific toy, even though there are two of most things in the house. But whatever life puts their way, they will always have a special bond and be best of friends. The school in their wisdom are placing them in different classes, but they each have a cousin in their class and one each of another set of twin friends, so I’m sure all will be well. It will make them more individual, but I think they will always be referred to as “the twins”.
The house will be incredibly peaceful during the day but maybe we can get to do some of the jobs that need doing without kiddie interruptions. That in turn should mean more quality family time including our extended family.
So good luck to all our little ones, and bigger ones, as you embark on a new school year. Enjoy life and make the most of every opportunity.
