By the early hours it was clear the poll was indeed very accurate, and as the number of seats hit the magic 326 around 5am I thought it was probably best to get some sleep.

No matter which side of the house you affiliate with, it is surely a good thing that there is now a Government with an overall majority that are in a position to get the country moving again. Obviously, though, not everyone feels the same way. I have been astounded by some of the vile comments, towards people that voted for the now Government flying around on social media. It seems that some believe, if you voted for the triumphant side, you are stupid and don’t understand what you voted for!

Fortunately, a week on, things seemed to have calmed and we can hopefully look forward to a more settled political situation.

In light of the anger, and after the Queens Speech, I thought about what I would like to say to the Prime Minister:-

Dear Boris,

Congratulations on being elected as Prime Minister and the large majority you now hold. Never forget, however it was us, the people who gave you this position, including people, who you rightly say have only lent you their vote. Please take heed.

1. The Country has given you a mandate to “get Brexit done”, Do this to the best of your ability and in the BEST interests of the United Kingdom.
2. Don’t let Brexit distract your Government from everything else that requires urgent attention.
3. Do what is best for the entire Nation, not just the Westminster bubble.
4. To the best of your ability, keep your promises in respect of investment, transport, the NHS, homelessness and Social Care.
5. BUT do what is best for the long term health of our society, not just short term fixes.
6. Do your utmost to fulfil your pledges to reduce our Country’s carbon emissions to slow down climate change and encourage other countries to do the same. This is not just for the now, it will affect our children and grandchildren’s futures, more than ours.
7. Contemplate what our children’s children will say when they try to remember what you did that had lasting positive effects on their lives.
8. You are often portrayed, in the media, as a bit of a clown, who embellishes the truth. So NOW is the time to show us that you can be a politician who is honest, ethical, forward-thinking, and a big part of the solution to our Country’s and the World’s problems.
9. So I urge you to remember that a lot of your recent votes are only on loan. You have a mere five years to prove your integrity, otherwise you may find yourself at the job centre.

I may be of the retired population, but I have children and grandchildren who will live in the world shaped by todays politicians.

I hope that we are entering a period of stability and decision making, that will return us to being a truly United Kingdom, respected around the World.
