On some of our trips to London, I have seen concerts by candlelight, advertised at many of the Cathedrals around the City. I have often thought it would be magical to attend one. I imagine the music, filling the vast buildings, being entrancing and the flickering candlelight embracing you in a warm hug. As yet I haven’t managed to take in the experience, but it remains on my to do list.

 

The Bestie spotted The Illuminated Orchestra, which seemed to offer a similar experience, were performing at one of our local theatres. It promised to bring the magic of film to life, playing some of the wonderful work of composer Hans Zimmer.

 

If like me, you’d need to research the work of Hans Zimmer, I was excited to see the long list of well known and favourite films, his compositions are associated with.  The orchestra is on a worldwide tour, lighting up many churches and cathedrals performing the iconic music. They promised to transform unforgettable soundtracks into powerful live experiences, captivating audiences with the emotional depth and brilliance of cinema’s most beloved scores.

 

We weren’t expecting the same immersive experience as sitting in a cathedral, but from our circle seats, we had a fabulous view of the stage. The orchestra was much larger than I had anticipated, with percussion and keyboards raised at the back of the stage. A brass section, including trombones and  trumpets, sat in a row in front of them alongside flutists. Another step down we had the deep, chest thumping, sound of the cellists. But I think my favourite group were the viola and violinists. They stood to one side of the stage, but were incredibly animated, obviously enjoying their performance immensely.

 

As we sped our way through time, with the music from Harry Potter, Avatar and Indiana Jones, we were mesmerised. The accompanying light show was, I imagine, not as encompassing as in a vast vaulted cathedral, but it was, as promised magical.

The viola and violinists played some electrifying solos, sending chills down the spine. A solo singer joined the orchestra on stage at several points, her operatic voice reverberating around the theatre. Each and every performance was perfection, bringing to life the memories of film.

Then we were taken by surprise, as the unforgettable music from Star Wars filled the air. the bows of the string section, lit up like light sabres. Wow, just wow, incredibly clever and totally unexpected.

Gosh what an incredible experience. Such recognisable music, played with love and enthusiasm. We were entranced from beginning to end. 

The experience has confirmed the Candle Light Concerts are definitely remaining on the wish list.
